About Mrs. Maier 

Mrs. Maier is one of the three Health Careers Instructor at CVCC and has been an Instructor here at CVCC since 2006. Before comming to CVCC she was a Health Careers Instructor at Bedford High School.  Mrs. Maier graduated from The University of Akron with a Bachelors Degree in the Science of Nursing She has over 20 years nursing experience. Mrs. Maier has worked in several different Hospital and Outpatient Departments including Intensive and Cardiac Care Units, Surgical, Preoperative and Recovery.Her specialty is Cardiovascular
Nursing. Mrs. Maier has also recieved her Masters Degree in Education from Kent State University. In each of her classes, Mrs. Maier uses direct instruction and real-life experiences to provide students with the skills they need to pursue a successful career in the health care industry.  
 
Below is a brief program description for Mrs. Maier's courses.
 
HEALTH CAREERS    •Tech Prep
                                   (Qualifying Students are eligible for Colllege Credit)
Credit:
Year One – 1.0 Anatomy/Physiology, 2.5 elective; 
Year Two– Medical Technology Option:  3.5 elective
Health Careers students learn patient care skills that are utilized in a variety of occupations in the medical field.  Students learn basic health care skills, medical laboratory processes, medical secretary procedures, physical therapy, Additional coursework is provided in anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, nutrition, infection control, and legal responsibilities.  In Year 1 all students take a core curriculum. 
In Year 2 students are recommended for either Pre-Nursing (State-Tested Nurse Assistant) or Medical Technology (Phlebotomist/EKG Technician).   Prerequisites for the course include grades of C or better in Algebra I and Biology, a GPA of at least 2.0 and an interview with the instructors prior to admission. 
 
Returning Seniors need to have their CPR, First Aid certification,and Pysical Forms
Medical Technology (Diagnostic Pathway) students focus on diagnostic skills and testing; including cardiovascular anatomy and physiology, electrocardiography (EKG) and phlebotomy skills. Laboratory specimen collection and testing, disease and disorders (pathophysiology) The Medical Technology class also prepares students for Tech Prep Medical Terminolgy testing at Tri-C
