About Mr. Nicodemus
Mr. Nicodemus is the Mathematics Instructor here at CVCC and has been a teacher here at CVCC for more than ten years. In each of his classes, Mr. Nicodemus uses direct instruction and real-life experiences to provide students with the skills they need to pursue a successful career in mathematics. Below is a brief program description for Mr. Nicodemus' courses.
Courses:
Geometry - This standards-based course is designed to assist Career Based Intervention students to find success in Geometry. Emphasis has been placed on using various techniques, including traditional lectures, note taking, practice, as well as incorporating the use of manipulatives throughout the course. Students acquire the mathematical understanding of such concepts as constructions, coordinate, and three-dimensional geometry. Algebraic reasoning will play a key role in student success.
Algebra for Career Based Intervention - This standards-based course is designed to help Career Based Intervention students make the transition from arithmetic to algebraic thinking. The emphasis is on the development and understanding of the real number system and on algebraic thinking. Students acquire skills such as adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing integers. Students solve multi-step equations involving real numbers. Problem solving in the course includes consumer applications of ratio, proportion, and percent. It continues to develop other important mathematics topics including graphing, patterns, functions, geometry, measurement, probability, and statistics.
Mathematics for Public Health and Safety/Building and Property Maintenance/Culinary Arts - These program areas have math support in order to team teach mathematics. The mathematics taught are targeted at skills seen as neccessary for student success (for example, Culinary Arts will differ from Building and Property Maintenance). The amount of time in each program ranges from one to three days a week.
